This position assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. The role involves collecting and analyzing sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases, as well as measuring lung capacity to identify impaired function. The Respiratory Therapist administers treatments prescribed by a physician for patients with breathing abnormalities and assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments.
