About The Position

A Respiratory Therapy Extern is a full-time student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program who works at the hospital in addition to clinical studies. Under the supervision of Registered Respiratory Therapists, the extern performs basic tasks learned in class and practiced in the school setting. The position is at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Oakland County.

Requirements

Must be a full-time student in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Successful completion of academic and clinical competencies specific to each task.
BLS Certification required.
Work experience may not substitute for the minimum education requirement.

Responsibilities

Safely and effectively administer medically prescribed medication, understand indications and contraindications, and follow policies and procedures when administering therapeutic modalities.
Maintain accurate and appropriate documentation and departmental records.
Participate in the department’s Continuous Quality Improvement Process and relate tracked processes to enhanced bedside care.
Respond to arrest situations as a member of the code team and perform CPR as required.
Contribute ideas for process improvement and assist personnel with data collection and interpretation.
Store, assemble, and maintain equipment as needed.
Collect equipment from hospital areas, clean it, and reassemble it according to proper procedure while observing standard precautions.
Administer medication and treatments in accordance with established policies.
Report identified unusual patient conditions or reactions to the immediate supervisor.
Perform quality control on Respiratory Care equipment, including the I-STAT blood gas analyzer.
Use resources efficiently and effectively.
Perform other duties as assigned.
