About The Position

The Transport Team Respiratory Care Practitioner ensures safe and high-quality care for critically ill or injured patients (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult) during ground or air transport, requiring specialized knowledge and skills. The Transport Team Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for coordinating patient stabilization, managing their condition, and ensuring patient safety during transport, while collaborating with other healthcare professionals to provide seamless, coordinated care. The Transport Team Respiratory Care Practitioner provides specialized respiratory care to patients during their transport between healthcare facilities, often those with critical or complex pulmonary conditions. The Transport Team Respiratory Care Practitioner maintains compliance with Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Center on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited program in respiratory care. Minimal requirement: Associate degree.
  • Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Illinois.
  • Three years of pediatric or neonatal critical care required (Pediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, or Emergency Department). Equivalent experience in an adult ICU may be considered as part of the three years.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of neonatal/pediatric diagnoses and management.
  • Basic Life Support Certification required.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership qualities by making independent decisions and taking decisive action, even in high-stress situations.
  • Utilizes and maintains advanced medical equipment, including ventilators, infusion pumps, monitors, and other life-support devices.
  • Capable of performing MEDIUM WORK. Must be able to carry 40 pounds at a time, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Requires good overall physical health and body agility to enter/exit ambulance, helicopter, and fixed wing aircraft. Frequently required to lift; push; pull equipment and patients.
  • Strong proficiency in Epic, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Intubation experience preferred.
  • Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) preferred. Must obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • NRP/PALS/ACLS/TNCC preferred and will be required in the first year of hire.
  • RCPs are required to obtain C-NPT within two years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and directs care for patients (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult) during interfacility transport in accordance with established protocols.
  • Performs stabilizing and life-saving procedures, such as CPR, intubation, and tracheostomy, as needed.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with airway management skills (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult).
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to manage complex respiratory conditions during transport.
  • Provides specialized respiratory care to patients during their transport between healthcare facilities, often those with critical or complex pulmonary conditions.
  • Proficient in using various respiratory equipment, including ventilators, oxygen delivery systems, and transport-specific devices.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and responses to treatment.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to all stakeholders, including patients, families, co-workers, referring center, and others to foster trust, loyalty, and a positive experience for everyone.
  • Other job functions as assigned.
