About The Position

The Respiratory Care Assistant (RCA) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is responsible for maintaining adequate supplies, medications, and medical gas tanks within the department. This role involves managing the accumulation and processing of dirty equipment to ensure a clean supply is always available. The RCA administers medications via nebulizer and participates in other non-invasive patient care activities. Importantly, this position does not involve critical care or the care of unstable patients, nor does it include invasive procedures like intubations or mechanical ventilation.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required
Registration with the NCRCB as an RCA required
Enrolled student in no standing of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program required
Ability to react calmly and maintain composure in stressful situations and when dealing with co-workers, patients, and hospital guests
Ability to communicate orally
Manual dexterity to operate and assemble equipment
Visual acuity
Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
Ability to position and move patients
Ability to push heavy equipment to patients’ bedsides
Position may involve skin, eye, and mucous membranes with blood or other potentially infectious materials

Responsibilities

Maintains adequate amounts of supplies needed for the department
Picks up dirty equipment and then processes them to maintain an adequate supply of clean, ready to use equipment
Performs testing of Cidex and/or other solutions utilized by the department
Administers continuous oxygen and continuous bland aerosol therapy per department guidelines
Does not participate in invasive procedures (Intubations) or critical care (mechanical ventilation)
Instruct patients in the use and performance of Incentive Spirometry
Performs CPT per department guidelines
Charges for all services provided inclusive of use of BCX system
Performs Arterial punctures
Other duties as assigned
