The Respiratory Care Assistant (RCA) performs routine prophylactic and therapeutic breathing exercises to improve patient outcome. This role involves instructing the patient, using cough and deep breathing techniques, and performing non-invasive monitoring to ensure patient safety and appropriateness of care. The RCA monitors patient’s vital signs, breath sounds, and oxygen saturation, reporting clinical concerns to appropriate personnel. They use equipment according to departmental policy/procedure and recognize clinical emergencies. Additionally, the RCA completes departmental and patient charge records for accurate documentation and billing, and enters/records procedures into the data processing system. They report routine and clinical procedures regarding patients to relief personnel to ensure continuity of care and provide accurate information about patients, communicating with appropriate personnel prior to report. The role also ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age Specific Care Guidelines, demonstrating knowledge and integrating it into patient care, and communicating information sensitive to the age and development level of the patient/family.
