About The Position

The primary goal of the Resource Room Teacher, with emphasis on students on the Autism Spectrum Disorder spectrum, is to ensure that there are individualized instructional programs for each student in the designated group. This person specifies the method of instruction, materials and classroom procedures to be followed. Implementation of appropriate recordkeeping and input on program effectiveness are also the responsibility of the classroom teacher. This person is to work in conjunction with the support staff to ensure that the individualized programming needs of the assigned students are being met in all identified areas to ensure maximum educational gain.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in special education required
  • Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education required
  • Demonstrates effective instructional and behavior management skills to support student learning and development.
  • Maintains working knowledge of behavior modification strategies, language disorders, and the instruction of daily living and social skills.
  • Collaborates effectively with teachers, support staff, administrators, and related service providers to maximize student success.
  • Supports the development of vocational, functional living, and independent life skills for young adults with ASD and cognitive impairments.
  • Communicates effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners to ensure high-quality educational programs and services.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with students on the Autistic Spectrum and other cognitive impairment is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized educational programs aligned with student needs and IEP goals.
  • Utilize effective instructional, classroom management, and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Lead and support paraprofessionals and classroom staff to ensure successful program implementation.
  • Collaborate with families, educators, service providers, and community agencies to support student success.
  • Monitor, document, and report student progress through data collection and record keeping.
  • Coordinate educational and transition services to promote academic, vocational, and independent living skills.
  • Maintain an organized, positive learning environment that fosters student growth and engagement.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and adhere to district policies and procedures.
  • Learns and performs medication administration and other health-related procedures for students with ASD and cognitive impairments under the direction and supervision of the school nurse.
  • Uses positive behavior supports and individualized interventions to promote student engagement, independence, and success.
  • Demonstrates patience, flexibility, and professionalism when working with students with diverse learning, behavioral, and communication needs.
