Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units from a recognized college or university, OR Possession of an associate or higher degree, from a recognized college or university OR Receipt of a passing score on the District Proficiency Test and the Instructional Assistance Test.
  • One year of experience as a classroom aide, preferably working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to type accurately.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and multiple site assignments.

  • Experience as a classroom or instructional aide working with visually impaired students.
  • Experience working with adult students.
  • Experience operating computer applications and adaptive equipment and software to assist visually impaired students.
  • Ability to type quickly and accurately.
  • Comfortable taking directives from instructors.
  • Able to build good rapport with students, instructors, Disability Support Staff (DSS), and other personnel.
  • Adapt well in different situations.
  • Able to maintain calm and know who and when to seek support.
  • Effective communicator who is able to explain concepts to students and ensure their understanding of the materials and information given to them.
  • Attentive to non-verbal cues.
  • Able to communicate any issues discovered to the instructors.
  • Punctual, conscientious, and patient.

Responsibilities

  • Assists a teacher and/or certificated staff in the development and presentation of educational materials for students with visual disabilities.
  • Tutors students in basic skills, computers, use of adaptive equipment, and other assigned areas.
  • Reads instructional materials to blind students.
  • Tapes, records, reproduces, duplicates, or enlarges instructional materials for students with low vision.
  • Assisting a teacher and/or certificated staff in developing a variety of instructional materials by researching, extracting, or rephrasing portions from textbooks.
  • Tutoring or assisting students, individually or in a group, in basic educational areas and in the use of computers and related software.
  • Determining what problems are being encountered by aides, students, and classroom teachers and recommending solutions to the certificated staff.
  • Demonstrating the use of adaptive equipment, software, and other supportive devices to students.
  • Administering diagnostic and assessment tests to students with visual disabilities; scoring and correcting tests; and discussing results with students and certificated staff.
  • Providing administrative support to certificated staff by preparing reports, completing forms, composing and typing correspondence, and filing.
