The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides meaningful and individually tailored services to meet the goals, desires and needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who live in a variety of community settings. The DSP works as part of a team to plan and schedule educational and community inclusion activities. The DSP is responsible for providing appropriate supervision, mentoring and teaching opportunities so that adults may gain greater independence and build meaningful relationships with community members. The DSP enables adults in the program to recognize and develop their strengths and abilities so they can be empowered to make choices and lead fulfilling lives. The DSP promotes person-centered concepts, provides opportunities for learning skills at home along with integration of individuals into the community and being involved in activities that increase independence. The DSP actively supports adults with IDD to choose and achieve the highest quality of life. FRIENDS’ person-centered approach ensures that people are receiving the services they need in order to gain independence and truly be part of their community.
