About The Position

We are seeking a Residential Counselor to join our Family Shelter! The Family Shelter provides temporary emergency shelter when circumstances resulting in homelessness cannot be avoided. We support families with a combination of case management and direct service, provided in an environment that affirms the dignity of the individuals being served.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in human services and a good understanding of homelessness issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to make prudent judgments and deal effectively with people in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Understanding of homelessness and families/people in crisis.
  • Capacity to ensure another person’s human dignity, regardless of one’s own personal views, life experience and personal opinions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with collateral contacts within the community.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications within one year and annually thereafter.
  • Reliable mode of transportation.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Normal range of hearing and vision is required, with or without correction.
  • Manual dexterity and motor skills are required to lift and grasp objects.
  • Bending and lifting are required to purchase access and/or transport program supplies.
  • Walking and climbing stairs are required for entry and mobility through the offices and rooms of Catholic Charities and the Shelter– all of which have several levels of stairs.
  • Must be able to observe, process information and carry out/understand complex directions and instructions.
  • Must be able to work with others, as a team and independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Post secondary study in human services a plus.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor shelter and client affairs, assist clients of shelter with needs and questions, and maintain shelter order in accordance with shelter, state and federal policies and guidelines.
  • Perform general administrative functions such as noting in communication logs, answering phones, provide appropriate information and referrals in a professional manner.
  • Document and maintain necessary records, logs, reports, etc.
  • Monitor activity of clients to ensure the safety of clients, volunteers and staff.
  • Ensure the supply, storage and safety of all foods supplied to Guest Families in the Shelter.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Provide a welcoming environment and be mindful of opportunities to teach housekeeping/house management and other life skills.
  • Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of the guests’ identities.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with guests.
  • Assist in the implementation of programs that are developed for the needs of the guests and assist in periodic studies and evaluations of the program.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
