About The Position

The Residential Counselor is responsible to deliver wellness and recovery-oriented case management and support services to service recipients in accordance with the New Jersey Department of Human Services-Division of Mental Health and Addictions Services regulations. The residential counselor provides support directly to the residents, including but not limited to: skill development, supportive counseling, transportation, crisis intervention, assistance with task completion, vocational and social support. Theodora House is a group home that serves consumers who have been discharged from a State psychiatric hospital.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health, health or other appropriate human services related discipline; a license as a registered nurse; a combination of one or more years of college, plus related work or life experience together equaling four years.
  • At least one year of related work or life experience if the four-year college degree does not meet the requirements above.
  • A license as a practical nurse plus two years of related work or life experience or a high school diploma or the equivalent, plus four years of related work or life experience.
  • A valid state driver’s license with a safe driving record that meets agency procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site supervision and support to service recipient.
  • Communicate observations and information about the service recipient to the program manager, RN and treatment team.
  • Supervise, organize and support recreational and/or socialization activities.
  • Transport and/or assist service recipient with accessing transportation to appointments.
  • Provide residential counseling and crisis intervention (but not including crisis intervention counseling).
  • Participate in the development of the individual service plan.
  • Participate in individual service coordination activities, including vocational and educational services.
  • Document observations information and services provided to the service recipient in progress notes.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment in the facility, including assisting with meal preparation and activities of daily living as needed by the service recipient.
