About The Position

This is an exciting multi-trade Residential Inspector opportunity within the City of Raleigh’s Building and Safety Division of the Planning and Development Department. Multi-trade inspectors perform inspections during various stages of residential construction projects. Our inspectors make sure all work meets North Carolina state code requirements for the building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades. This position involves communication with various project stakeholders, including city leadership and the public. The City of Raleigh is the second-largest city in North Carolina and remains one of the fastest growing areas in the country. The Planning and Development Department is responsible for planning and visioning for the future growth of Raleigh and permitting and inspections for residential and non-residential development projects. Our inspectors make sure that all work meets state code requirements for the building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades. All four trade groups perform an average of 600 inspections a day in Raleigh!

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 1 to 3 years’ experience in residential/commercial construction inspection, construction or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Level I certification in all four of the following: Plumbing Inspection, Mechanical Inspection, Electrical Inspection, Building Inspector
  • Knowledge of general construction, general framing, accepted engineering practices
  • Knowledge of code books, UL listings, component testing
  • Knowledge of local jurisdiction codes that differ from international codes
  • Knowledge of North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (NCOSFM) interpretations of Codes
  • Knowledge of Energov system
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to properly interpret code books and their applicability

Responsibilities

  • Performs building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing field inspections of residential projects.
  • Responds to information requests and inquiries; provides technical advice to City staff, design professionals, the public, and other project stakeholders; provides interpretation of building codes and ordinances and those associated with applicable trade(s) specialty.
  • Performs code-related research; identifies trade code compliance issues; provides alternative solutions to resolve issues.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, records, data, and documentation related to inspections, plans review, research, and other project reviews.
  • Plans and prioritizes schedule and field activities; maintains communication with property owners, other inspectors, and stakeholders to coordinate and facilitate inspection work.
  • Identifies, develops, implements, and maintains processes and practices that encourage, support, and promote effective, comprehensive, and meaningful citizen engagement.
