About The Position

An individual in this position generally provides observation and reporting on construction projects through daily observations, and daily and weekly reporting of the contractor’s work to ensure compliance with design drawings, specifications and permits. Additionally, basic contract administration duties are also a part of your role. This is a seasonal, full-time position. Approximately 9 months working 40 hours per week, no weekends. Local residents only.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of field utility/telecom/construction inspection experience required
  • Experience with trenching, plowing, boring, excavations, or cable placement required.
  • Familiar with various construction equipment that might be employed from drill rigs to excavators, hoe hammers, compressors, etc.
  • Able to interpret and explain plans, specifications and permit requirements.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, permit entity representatives and other stakeholders.
  • Able to resolve conflicts that may arise from time to time with advice from the BHC home office.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to stand for long hours and walk up to 3 miles a day.
  • Ability to physically perform field work, sometimes requiring working in hot and cold weather while handling equipment
  • Knowledge and ownership of smart phone to communicate with office and send documentation as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, team player, detail oriented, motivated.
  • Able to utilize field applications for daily reports, quantity installation tracking and submitting as-built redlines.
  • Owns reliable vehicle.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary field point of contact and first line of response for construction-related questions, issues, and unforeseen conditions, coordinating with contractors, inspectors, and the BHC design office to facilitate timely resolution and maintain project progress.
  • Performs daily observation of construction activities, including large rig, HDD, Seaward operations, manhole excavation, and setting in smaller directional drilling in public right ways.
  • Keeps daily inspection records (Daily Log) which include a description of the construction activity, time of day, daily weather, crew members and equipment make and model, names of visitors, and irregularities and corrective action regarding compliance with the drawings, specifications and permit.
  • Ensures compliance of work completed according to drawings and specifications and report same.
  • Keeps Quantity Records of acceptably installed facilities (pipes, conduit, manholes, etc.).
  • Notes relevant data and discrepancies on reporting tools.
  • Observes traffic control set up in accordance with the permits and reports any discrepancies to their supervisor as well as notes them in daily logs.
  • Works with the Contractor in coordinating the schedule of operations as directed by the on-site Archaeologist and Project Manager.
  • Reports on any out of scope and work that out with the BHC home office.
  • Conducts weekly coordination meeting with the Contractor’s Superintendent to coordinate crew location and work hours, ensure traffic control features are properly placed, etc.
  • Records and documents notable discrepancies in Company’s digital reporting tools.
  • Acts as an active liaison between the field and BHC's design office where the contract is managed assist with ensuring or if RFIs are answered correctly, etc.
  • Understands pricing basics, whether unit price or lump sum or time and materials.
  • Understands and manages the testing required in specifications and report compliance.
  • Understands there's an environmental overlay to the project that has environmental mitigations and will be expected to observe and report on those being followed.
  • Works with the agencies having jurisdiction inspectors to answer their questions, keep them informed and ensure they get the information they need so that construction progresses smoothly.
  • Submits accurate time sheets and expense reports to the Project Manager.
  • Photographs site progress and submit reports to office.
