Resident Engineer Highways & Buildings Construction
About The Position
Boswell is seeking a Resident Engineer with experience in Highway and Buildings Construction. This role supports the construction and inspection of commercial and small-building projects in Central New Jersey. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on construction professional experienced in inspecting building construction, reviewing plans and specifications, coordinating with contractors and project teams, and ensuring work complies with codes, standards, and project requirements. The Resident Engineer will collaborate with clients, contractors, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to monitor progress, identify issues, document field conditions, and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and according to contract documents.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Building Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in building construction, construction inspection, construction management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience with commercial buildings and/or small-building construction projects.
- Experience working on NJTA (New Jersey Turnpike Authority) projects is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of building construction methods, materials, plans, specifications, and construction sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, MEP, and construction drawings.
- Familiarity with applicable New Jersey and international building codes, construction standards, and inspection requirements.
- PE license is preferred but not required.
- Construction, inspection, engineering, or industry certifications are a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally with contractors, clients, architects, engineers, public officials, and other project stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Nice To Haves
- PE license is preferred but not required.
- Construction, inspection, engineering, or industry certifications are a plus.
Responsibilities
- Perform field inspections of commercial, institutional, and small-building construction projects.
- Monitor construction activities for compliance with approved plans, specifications, applicable building codes, and project requirements.
- Review construction plans, drawings, specifications, and submittals to support field inspection activities.
- Document daily construction activities, site conditions, progress, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
- Identify potential construction issues and communicate findings to project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
- Review contractor work, materials, and installation methods for conformance with project requirements.
- Attend and participate in pre-construction, progress, coordination, and project close-out meetings.
- Coordinate with contractors, architects, engineers, owners, and municipal representatives as needed.
- Review contractor payment applications and verify quantities and completed work where applicable.
- Assist with project documentation, punch lists, close-out activities, and as-built information.
- Support quality assurance and quality control efforts throughout the construction process.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, photographs, reports, and project documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and field support to project teams as needed and travel to active project sites.
