About The Position

Weston & Sampson is seeking Engineers/Construction Inspectors for horizontal construction projects in the Capital District and Hudson Valley, New York. These projects will involve field work such as inspecting roadway reconstruction (resurfacing, drainage, curbing, sidewalks, street lighting), and utilities improvements (water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, utility infrastructure). The role requires careful coordination with clients, contract administration, reporting, and close collaboration with supporting engineers. A flexible working schedule is necessary as project needs arise. The candidate will review contract documents, permits, and construction management requirements to assess contractor compliance, evaluate work schedules, attend pre-construction meetings, and ensure shop drawing compliance. Responsibilities include measuring quantities, observing construction quality, preparing daily records, reporting issues, maintaining liaison with stakeholders, attending site meetings, potentially recommending payment estimates, maintaining punch lists, and supervising subordinate staff. Some local and regional travel may be required, and applicable certifications for erosion and sediment control inspections must be obtained and maintained.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction, or related field
  • Two or more years of experience with resident engineering services, underground construction, or related work
  • NICET Level II certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies
  • Experience with general construction inspection policies, procedures and administrative requirements
  • Working knowledge and experience with interpreting contract documents, including compliance with prevailing safety regulations
  • Excellent public relations, written and verbal communication skills and organizational/time management skills
  • Prepare and maintain electronic field records efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to work well with contractors, engineers, and clients
  • Valid driver’s license and able to provide own reliable transportation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with erosion and sediment controls
  • Survey and design engineering experience
  • AutoCAD and GIS experience

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the client, contract administration and reporting, and close coordination with engineers.
  • Provide a flexible working schedule as project needs arise.
  • Review contract documents, permits and construction management requirements to identify and report degree of Contractor's compliance.
  • Review and evaluate Contractor’s work schedules and updates with the Project Manager.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings; check compliance of shop drawings and other construction modifications; measure the quantities and observe quality of construction; prepare daily records of construction work; record and report problems and failures to comply with contract documents and construction management requirements.
  • Maintain, liaison and attend regular site meetings to anticipate construction work, potential problems, progress, and other job-related conditions.
  • Review and recommend monthly payment estimates; maintain construction “punch lists” to be completed or corrected; provide coordination and assistance related to other requirements; supervise subordinate consultant staff and survey crew as appropriate.
  • Obtain and maintain applicable certifications for erosion and sediment control inspections.
