About The Position

Modern Family Law (MFL) is seeking 3Ls and recent graduates to participate in its MFL Academy’s Residency Program in Oakland or San Jose, California. This hybrid role requires candidates to sit for the Bar exam and plan to reside in the state of application. After the Bar exam, residents will receive training in family law and courtroom advocacy, with mentorship from the MFL Learning & Development department and legal teams. The goal is to transition residents into MFL Associate Attorney positions upon passing the Bar. The program offers a remote-first setting with available office space, a low billable hours requirement (100 per month) for Associate Attorneys, direct client contact on divorce, child custody, and financial support cases, opportunities for first-chair litigation experience, access to technology, ongoing learning and development, and transparent advancement tracks. Competitive salaries are offered: $83,200 for Residents and $145,000 for Associate Attorneys.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Register for the upcoming February or July 2027 Bar exam.
  • Attain a passing score on the MPRE before sitting for the Bar exam.
  • Timely submission and approval of Character & Fitness application by the State Bar.
  • Must sit for the Bar and plan to reside in the state where you are applying.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Family Law Clinics is a plus.
  • Mock Trial experience is a plus.
  • Submission of cover letter, law school transcript, and responses to candidate questionnaire.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training in substantive family law and courtroom advocacy.

  • Practice and develop litigation skills as first chair early in your career.
  • Manage caseload and communication using cutting-edge technology.
