About The Position

This position provides individualized attention to residents, aiming to help them attain and maintain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. The Resident Assistant is knowledgeable about each resident's care plan and provides support accordingly. They contribute to the care planning process by sharing observations and information about resident needs and preferences with the nursing staff. The role involves assisting residents with daily living activities, maintaining their comfort and dignity, and ensuring the confidentiality of their information. Responsibilities include preparing and serving meals, documenting care, reporting changes in resident condition, and ensuring resident rights are upheld. The position also involves monitoring for safety hazards, recording incidents, and administering medications according to facility policy, including narcotic medications which require two staff sign-offs. The Resident Assistant must honor a resident's right to refuse care and report such instances. They are responsible for maintaining a safe, neat, and clean environment, checking on residents who may need assistance, and promptly reporting any changes in condition or behavior to the licensed nurse. Additional duties include checking vital signs, weighing residents, assisting with resident and family orientation upon admission, and helping residents with mobility. The role requires effective communication and adherence to safety and infection control policies, including proper hand washing and use of personal protective equipment. Attendance at mandatory training is required to maintain certification.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion and proof of a PCA/HHA training program that meets the 54 training hour requirement from EOEA

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant certification preferred but not required
  • Previous experience working in long term care/assisted living community preferred
  • Previous experience working with dementia residents.

Responsibilities

  • Orients and mentors newly hired resident assistants.
  • Provides individualized attention, which encourages each resident’s ability to maintain or attain the highest practical physical, mental and psychosocial well-being.
  • Is knowledgeable of the individualized care plan for residents, and provides support to the resident in accordance with their care plan.
  • Contributes to the care planning process by providing the nurse or other care planning staff with specific information and observations of resident’s needs and preferences.
  • Attends to the individual needs of residents, which may include assistance with dressing, grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, transferring, ambulation, range of motion, nail care, shaving, communicating or other needs in keeping with the individuals’ care requirements.
  • Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of residents in the delivery of services to them.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
  • Prepare residents for meals, serve food trays and assist with feeding as indicated.
  • Records required documentation in resident health record.
  • Reports all changes in resident’s condition to the nurse on duty/call as soon as practical.
  • Fully understands all aspects of residents’ rights. Is responsible for promptly reporting any incidents or evidence or resident abuse or violations of resident rights to the nurse on duty/call or administration.
  • Observes and reports changed in resident’s physical conditions and cognitive/emotional status and maintain behavior log when indicated.

  • Performs SAMM in accordance with facility policy and procedure.
  • Reports any discrepancy noted with family filled medi-sets and pharmacy filled calendar cards.

  • Honor resident right to refuse care, report such refusal to nurse supervisor.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, neat and clean environment.
  • Ensure that residents who are unable to call for help are checked frequently.
  • Observe residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly reports to licensed nurse on duty.
  • Performs various task assigned by supervisor, including checking vital signs and weighing residents.
  • Assist with orienting resident and their families to the facility on admission.
  • Assist residents to walk with or without self-help devices as instructed.
  • Lifts, moves, and transports residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention.
  • Use only the equipment you have been trained to use, operate in a safer manner.
  • Report defective equipment to the nurse.
  • Communicate and interacts effectively and tactfully with the residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  • Assist and escort residents to appointments such as the hair salon or attending activities, church services or doctor’s appointments.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with safety and infection control policies and procedures, including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated and proper disposal of soiled materials.
  • Follow established policies concerning exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Attend and participate in mandatory, and scheduled training and educational classes to maintain current certification as a Nursing/Resident Assistant.
