About The Position

The Residence Life Facilities Technician is an integral member of the Residence Life team and is responsible for overseeing the maintenance activities and project work coordination for the 11 residence halls. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, dynamic, and well-maintained residential community, ensuring exceptional service, prompt responses, and innovative solutions to meet student needs and enhance the student experience. This position inspects, maintains, and repairs custodial equipment and Residence Life facilities, as well as oversees work orders, supply inventory, and project management for the department. This position assists with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed. In addition, the position works closely with other Residence Life custodial and operations staff, Facilities Management staff, and outside contractors to coordinate the daily support for the residence halls and students, and the university’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and student success. The performance responsibilities of this position involve working at heights and in darkened facilities, moving weight loads sometimes exceeding 50 pounds, crawling with low head clearance, working on ladders and personnel lifts, and working outside of standard university office hours for trainings, and occasional weekend, evenings, or emergency response coverage.

Requirements

  • Three years of maintenance and/or operations experience
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, comfort with public speaking, able to listen and learn, generate trust among various constituencies, and exercise good judgement
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to work with diverse groups or individuals and build partnerships; able to operate comfortably and effectively in cross-functional teams through multiple levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to function in both independent and team environments
  • Demonstrate analytical, problem solving, organizational and management skills
  • Organize work tasks logically and efficiently, demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects, and work within shifting priorities and schedules
  • Recognize safety concerns and adhere to safety procedures, communicate facility issues, read labels, and follow instructions for proper use of equipment and supplies
  • Able to perform manual labor including lifting of up to 50 pounds or more and possess a valid driver’s license
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, group calendar, email, electric files, and able to learn payroll system, and event scheduling system
  • Pass essential job function screening

Responsibilities

  • Provide facilities and services that complement and supplement the mission of the university and focuses on student learning in a team environment.
  • Utilize the work order management system to provide customer service-focused facilities management, ensuring that students receive prompt responses and solutions to their concerns.
  • Serve as the department liaison with Facilities Management and work collaboratively and develop strong working relationships.
  • Receive, inspect, inventory and distribute equipment, supplies, and furniture to appropriate areas and staff.
  • Repair and maintain department custodial equipment, furniture, and property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation.
  • Troubleshoot, escalate, and document issues according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine and non-routine building inspections to monitor spaces for safety, comfort, and aesthetic appeal, and make recommendations for repairs, upgrades, and replacement.
  • Coordinate trades, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed.
  • Assist building control systems staff to ensure proper heating, ventilation, and air conditioning within the residence halls.
  • Operate as an active member of the Residence Life team to maintain a constant focus on team building and ultimately team success.
  • Collaborate with Residence Life staff to create a supportive living-learning environment that enhances student success and engagement, providing responsive facilities management to meet student needs.
  • Network with colleagues to keep abreast of current trends and issues in the campus housing profession.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, campus partners, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Attend training and development seminars.
  • Represent Residence Life at major university functions and events.
  • Assure compliance with state and university purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Prepare departmental and contractual purchase requisitions for maintenance equipment, supplies, and furniture.
  • Assist in the development of both annual and long-range maintenance plans and cost estimates for the residence halls.
  • Be available for emergency and on-call situations.
  • Serve as a backup for snow maintenance of residence hall entrances, this includes snow removal and treatment.
  • Serve on campus committees as requested and assigned.

  • Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries independently to appropriate entities
  • Utilizes specialized equipment to repair and maintain complex machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
