About The Position

The Researcher will be responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of research projects. The Researcher will lead and support community-based research using Indigenous community-based research methodologies and wise practices from Indigenous women. They will conduct research and report the findings, which will be used to support proposals and policy development to address a variety of issues impacting Indigenous women and their families. The Researcher will work collaboratively with the team to prepare research papers, policy recommendations and project reports, integrating project management principles, performance measurement strategies, and data governance protocols. The Researcher will develop short- and long-term research work plans that are directly connected to the ONWA Strategic Plan, ensuring alignment with project objectives, performance metrics, and data governance requirements. The Researcher will analyze current data and identify potential funding opportunities on the horizon for ONWA. The Researcher will represent ONWA at regional and/or provincial government committees and tables and connect and collaborate with research institutions to foster potential partnership opportunities. The Researcher will bring to the attention of ONWA current developments in research that affect Indigenous women and their families.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Public Health Administration, Epidemiology, Indigenous Studies, Women's Studies, or a related discipline.
Minimum five (5) years of experience leading Indigenous community-based research projects.
Demonstrated experience conducting Gender-Based Analysis on issues affecting Indigenous women and their families.
Demonstrated experience conducting research, compiling and analyzing results, and preparing reports.
Proven experience using statistical software for data analysis and data management.
Skilled in conducting interviews, focus groups, and sharing circles, including engagement with those who have experienced violence and trauma.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and manage timelines effectively.
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening and interpretation of diverse perspectives.
Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to interact effectively with government departments, Indigenous organizations, communities, and research institutions.
Ability to integrate Indigenous perspectives and values into research and data governance practices.
Strong knowledge of Indigenous research methodologies and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Knowledge of research and evaluation practices, performance measurement, and data governance.
Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting Indigenous women and their families, including gender-based violence, sexual violence, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
Knowledge of Indigenous data sovereignty principles; OCAP® training is considered an asset.
Knowledge of social determinants of health and their impacts on Indigenous women, families, and communities.
Knowledge of not-for-profit organizations and community-based research environments.
Knowledge of both Western and Indigenous research methodologies, including evaluation methods and practices.
Knowledge of ethics practices in research, including national standards and policies for research involving Indigenous populations.
Knowledge of copyright law, intellectual property rights, and the use of artificial intelligence in research is considered an asset.
Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, teachings, and community perspectives.
Knowledge of government systems, administration, and processes relevant to Indigenous research and policy development.
Awareness of recent, historical, and intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous women and their families, including psychological, neurological, physiological, social, and spiritual impacts.
Understanding of cultural trauma-informed care and wise practices.
Strong understanding of Gender-Based Analysis from an integrated feminist, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive lens.
