About The Position

Huawei Canada has an immediate 12-month contract opening for a Researcher. The Smart Grid Technology Lab focuses on research in real-time simulation technologies, microgrid energy management, control systems, and other smart grid technologies. We apply cutting-edge technologies to the digital power industry. The lab has developed into a research organization with significant achievements and a strong impact in the industry.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or Ph.D. students in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a strong publication record.
• Proficiency with circuit design and simulation tools (e.g., EMTP, PSCAD, etc.).
• Strong knowledge of microgrids/IBRs and related standards, and a strong understanding of the protection of IBRs and their dynamics.
• Fluent in C/C++ and Python.
• Familiar with communication protocols, such as IEC61850 (SV, Goose, MMS), MODBUS, etc., and generating .dll and .exe files and working with them.
• Proficiency in English is essential.

Nice To Haves

• FPGA and/or PLC programming is an asset.
• Familiar with machine learning and deep learning techniques, such as SVM and CNN.

Responsibilities

• Developing grid integration technologies for grid-forming and grid-following inverters and converters.
• Work under a supervisor with a team of experts to develop a set of power system and control component models for power system EMT simulation.
• Implementing different grid-forming control strategies, such as droop or VSG, improving them, and implementing different protection strategies for IBRs, such as anti-islanding protection.
• Developing protection and control algorithms in C/C++ and Python, and converting the developed algorithms in C/C++ and Python to DLL or .EXE files.
• Simulating microgrids in EMTP, PLECS, and/or Simulink.
• Generating C/C++ code of the simulated model and optimizing it for real-time simulation.
• Deploying different communication protocols, such as SV, GOOSE, MBUS, and IOT protocols.
• Working with the PLC controller to host the developed algorithm.
• Eager to prepare report documents for patent applications and journal/conference publications.
