About The Position

We are seeking a Research Technologist to perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures. Under the general supervision of the faculty investigator and senior laboratory personnel, the Part-Time Research Technologist will support research in human stem cell biology and neurodegenerative disease. The incumbent will use established protocols to assist with experiments involving human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and differentiated neural or vascular cell models; collect and organize experimental data; and maintain accurate laboratory records. The position requires basic scientific knowledge, careful attention to detail, and prompt communication of technical problems. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to support reliable, reproducible laboratory research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education permitted by the JHU equivalency formula beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and work safely with biological materials
  • Strong organizational, time-management, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Reliability in maintaining an agreed part-time schedule
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous laboratory experience in mammalian cell culture, stem cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related area.
  • Experience with aseptic technique, microscopy, immunostaining, PCR/qPCR, Western blotting, or ELISA is desirable.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Prior biosafety, human-subjects research, or laboratory safety training is desirable but not required; required institutional training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Follow established procedures and use aseptic technique to maintain mammalian cell cultures, including human iPSCs and differentiated neural, glial, or vascular cell models.
  • Perform routine molecular and cellular assays, which may include DNA/RNA extraction, PCR or qPCR, protein preparation, immunocytochemistry, Western blotting, ELISA, microscopy, and image-based analysis.
  • Assist with sample preparation, data collection, basic quantitative analysis, and organization of results. Maintain complete, accurate, and timely experimental records in accordance with laboratory and institutional standards.
  • Prepare reagents and media; label, organize, and track biological samples; monitor inventory; and assist with ordering and receiving laboratory materials in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance, including cleaning and organizing shared work areas, monitoring equipment, and supporting compliance with biosafety and research procedures.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and training, communicate progress or technical problems promptly, and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following common protocols independently or with instructions.
  • Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques and methods of the lab.
  • Gain problem-solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
  • Run lab tests and complete measurements.
  • Identify and resolve common problems involved in routine assays.
  • Increase skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
