Research Technician - Biology

Tufts University•Medford, MA

About The Position

The Allen Discovery Center advances basic biology and biomedicine through integrated approaches to controlling biological structure and function. Its research combines molecular genetics, biophysics, and computational methods to study control of biological patterning and bioelectric communication. Applications include developmental biology, regenerative medicine, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic biology. This limited-term position ends November 15, 2027, and reports to a senior scientist at the Center. The Research Technician assists with molecular biology and cell culture work, including plasmid DNA preparation, cloning, transfection, RNA isolation and preparation for RNA-seq, RT-PCR/qPCR, cell culture maintenance, and multiplex cell imaging under a microscope. The role also involves recording and summarizing results, limited data interpretation, statistical analysis, and maintaining laboratory equipment, inventory, and supplies.

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Detail-oriented, with experience producing reproducible, high-quality data.
  • Able to manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extremely organized, with excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Able to work independently and demonstrate a strong drive toward excellence in state-of-the-art research.

Nice To Haves

  • 1–2 years of molecular biology or cell culture experience in an academic or industrial laboratory.
  • Familiarity with basic statistics, image analysis software, and GraphPad Prism.
  • Experience with 3D tissue culture.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and specialized biological experiments according to appropriate protocols and procedures.
  • Suggest ideas for protocol development as needs arise.
  • Perform molecular biology and cell culture techniques, including plasmid DNA preparation, cloning, transfection, RNA isolation and preparation for RNA-seq, RT-PCR/qPCR, and cell culture plating and maintenance.
  • Perform multiplex cell imaging under a microscope.
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments and results.
  • Perform limited data interpretation and summarization.
