About The Position

The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University, School of Medicine, offers a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment for cutting-edge research. This Research Technician position is part of Dr. Guoqiang Gu's research group and focuses on conducting basic research on diabetes. The role involves performing fundamental procedures in cell and RNA preparation, tissue fixation, sectioning, antibody staining, imaging, gene expression analysis, and physiological studies, primarily utilizing islet culture and mouse models. The technician will also contribute to mouse colony management, tissue collection, and immunostaining. A key aspect of the role is accurately observing, recording, and reporting findings to Dr. Gu and lab manager Ruiying Hu, with an expectation for motivation to advance to more independent projects.

Requirements

  • A BA/BS or equivalent degree in biology
  • Basic familiarity with biological specimen handling and processing
  • Basic computer skills to use common word/imaging programs

Nice To Haves

  • Specific experience working with mice is strongly preferred
  • The ability to use “R” for gene expression analysis is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic research on diabetes
  • Perform basic procedures in cell/RNA preparation
  • Perform basic procedures in tissue fixation/sectioning/antibody staining
  • Perform basic procedures in imaging
  • Perform basic procedures in gene expression analysis
  • Perform basic procedures in physiological studies primarily in islet culture and mouse models
  • Handle mice
  • Prepare cells from dissected tissues
  • Prepare RNA
  • Conduct computational analysis of gene expression using ImageJ
  • Help with mouse colony management
  • Help with tissue collection
  • Help with tissue fixation
  • Help with sectioning
  • Help with immunostaining
  • Accurately observe, record, and report findings to Dr. Gu and/or Manager Hu
  • Manage mouse colony, including cross setup and genotyping
  • Collect and section tissue, followed by immuno-staining and imaging
  • Perform islet picking and preparation of single-cell suspension
  • Prepare RNA and DNA from tissues/cells
  • Conduct basic gene expression analyses using immunofluorescence images with Image J
  • Collaborate with different personnel in the laboratory according to different daily needs
