About The Position

Support advanced Battery Research and Development Laboratory activities through hands‑on operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory systems and test equipment. This role enables safe, reliable, and repeatable testing through strong applied electronics fundamentals, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to GM laboratory procedures and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, electronics technology, engineering technology, or a related field, and/or minimum of 3+ years of relevant work experience in a research laboratory test environment or as an instrumentation/service technician.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work independently as well as collaboratively within cross‑functional and multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • High level of analytical and problem‑solving skills, including the ability to diagnose and resolve non‑routine, complex, and technically challenging issues.
  • Experience applying data‑driven problem‑solving techniques to support troubleshooting, process improvement, and decision‑making in a dynamic test environment.
  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety, including consistent adherence to safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly document work, communicate technical information, and support knowledge transfer.
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and fast‑changing environments, adapting to evolving priorities and experimental needs.
  • Proactive approach to learning, with the ability and willingness to stay current on new technologies, tools, and competitive products relevant to laboratory testing and instrumentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline or 7+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance and calibration practices, including experience consistent with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar laboratory quality standards.
  • Experience in battery development, characterization, or test environment would be an advantage.
  • Familiarity with battery and electrochemical test equipment including systems from Maccor, Bitrode, Arbin, Solartron, Gamry, Bio-Logic etc. or equivalent platforms, encompassing setup, operation, test methodology, and routine maintenance.
  • Experience with National Instruments LabVIEW, including graphical programming, test automation, or integration with data acquisition and control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Apply practical electronics theory and system‑level operating principles across electrical, electromechanical, and mechanical subsystems to support the operation and maintenance of research laboratory equipment, including battery cyclers, power supplies, data loggers, and environmental chambers.
  • Read and interpret technical documentation, electrical diagrams, and schematics to support equipment setup, troubleshooting, repair, and safe operation within the laboratory environment.
  • Build, modify, and maintain custom test instrumentation for use in research laboratory environment such as test fixtures, cables, and related hardware to support experiments and standardized test methods.
  • Operate laboratory test equipment for calibration, automated testing, and data logging in accordance with defined test procedures and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with glove boxes, battery cyclers, environmental thermal chambers and associated interface systems used in battery cell development and testing.
  • Safely operate general machine shop and material fabrication tools in compliance with established safety procedures and training requirements.
  • Document equipment status, maintenance activities, and test setup details to ensure traceability, compliance, and continuous improvement of lab operations.
