About The Position

The laboratory of Dr. Alison Swaims-Kohlmeier at Emory University is seeking a Research Specialist to join our group and contribute to our research on cellular immunity against genitourinary pathogens. The position will involve hands-on cellular immunology research using human samples and animal models of the menstrual cycle. Typical skills used in our laboratory include isolation of immune cells from tissues, in vitro cell culture, quantifying bacterial burdens, high-parameter flow cytometry, single-cell genomics, and in vivo imaging. Training in these techniques will be provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with modern immunology, virology, and/or molecular biology techniques is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
  • Assistance with day-to-day operations of the lab and maintenance of animal colonies.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team is essential.
