About The Position

The Wong lab in the Departments of Human Genetics and Pediatrics is looking for a Research Specialist to join our neuropharmacogenetics laboratory. We study the development and progression of pediatric epilepsy over the lifespan with the long-term goal of developing better treatments. We also study the intersection between epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. The Research Specialist position will be a one-year position with the possibility of renewal. This is a full-time position with some weekend and/or holiday work required depending on the experimental needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Prior wet lab research experience.
  • Prior mouse handling skills.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
  • Maintain the mouse colony.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments, which include studies on seizure susceptibility and behavior assessments in mouse models.
  • Responsible for routine laboratory maintenance activities- such as cleaning and sterilization of laboratory equipment, making solutions, maintain laboratory inventory of chemicals and supplies.
  • Perform defined research experiments, including seizure induction paradigms, EEG surgery, EEG analyses, and behavioral assessments.
  • Compiles data for grants, publications, and presentations.
