UNIV- Research Specialist II- Department of Regenerative Medicine

Medical University of South Carolina•Charleston, SC
•$46,206 - $78,540

About The Position

The Research Specialist II works under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) in a basic biomedical science laboratory focused on disease modeling with human pluripotent stem cell-derived 3D colonic organoids. The role supports routine experiments and laboratory maintenance, with emphasis on maintaining and differentiating human pluripotent stem cells, working with intestinal and colonic organoids, performing histology and immunohistochemistry, light-microscope imaging, and biochemical assays. The work contributes to generating and characterizing novel models of human colonic diseases. The specialist also assists with selecting and ordering reagents and supplies and setting up the laboratory. The employee is expected to conduct experiments, collect and record data with a reasonable degree of independence and discretion, while remaining under the PI’s supervision. The position also includes participation in animal-protocol drafting and scientific manuscript preparation. The role requires minimal mouse work; small-animal surgery experience is not required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or another natural, life, or health care science.
  • One year of work experience directly related to the assigned research area.
  • Strong organizational, record-keeping, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform minimal mouse work.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or another life science.
  • Experience with laboratory techniques such as PCR and recombinant DNA work, western blotting, cell culture, histology and immunostaining, and microscopic imaging.
  • Prior experience in laboratory management roles.
  • Small-animal surgery experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and plan routine experiments, optimize daily experimental protocols, select and order reagents and laboratory supplies, and maintain accurate, timely experimental records.
  • Share responsibility for maintaining human pluripotent stem cells and human intestinal and colonic organoids, including passaging, differentiation, and maintenance of 3D cultures.
  • Perform histology and immunohistochemistry, including tissue collection, processing and embedding, sectioning, staining, and imaging.
  • Perform basic molecular biology and biochemistry experiments, including DNA isolation, genotyping, real-time PCR, and western blotting.
  • Participate in drafting animal protocols and preparing scientific manuscripts.
  • Assist the PI with setting up the laboratory.
