About The Position

The Research Software Engineer I role involves developing, testing, and maintaining software applications that support research, instructional, and operational initiatives. This position assists in translating project requirements into functional software solutions using established development frameworks and tools. The engineer will modify existing applications, troubleshoot technical issues, and contribute to system enhancements under the guidance of senior team members. Additionally, the role supports the development and implementation of software solutions used in research environments, including data processing workflows, integrations, cloud-based services, AI-enabled applications, and research technology platforms. The engineer will also participate in software deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities to ensure reliable operation of project systems. Responsibilities include assisting in gathering technical requirements, documenting system specifications, and supporting integration efforts between various platforms. The role also involves participating in software testing, debugging, quality assurance processes, and creating/maintaining technical documentation. Collaboration with project teams, faculty, researchers, designers, and developers is essential, as is communicating technical information to diverse audiences.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in computer or physical science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and two years of experience; OR a Master’s Degree in computer or physical science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing software applications using one or more programming languages such as Python, C#, JavaScript, Java, or similar languages.
  • Familiarity with software development frameworks, libraries, and development tools.
  • Experience with web application development technologies and modern development workflows.
  • Familiarity with software testing, debugging, and version control systems such as Git.
  • Exposure to cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, or research computing environments.
  • Experience working with APIs, databases, and system integrations.
  • Familiarity with AI, machine learning, data analytics, or data processing workflows.
  • Exposure to XR, simulation, visualization, or educational technology applications is desirable.
  • Understanding of software engineering principles including maintainability, security, scalability, and documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new technologies and development methodologies.
  • Interest in developing technology solutions that support research, education, and public service missions.
