About The Position

The Denman lab in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics is seeking to hire an Entry-level Research Services Professional (RSP). This position would join a team focused on understanding the functions of neurons and circuits in neocortex and specifically the early visual system. This position offers collaboration across multiple laboratories, combining electrophysiology and behavioral assessment of visual function and perception. In addition to understanding normal function, we are interested in neurological conditions leading to alterations in visual processing. Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Intermediate Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of mouse neuroscience research techniques
  • Ability to perform animal behavioral training
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Willing to work with tissues and laboratory mice

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field and experience with data analysis
  • Specific work experience in behavioral and neurophysiology techniques.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Software programs.
  • Experience with Data Science and Python Knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigator (PI) and lab members with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects, including regular behavioral training of animals for psychophysical testing and neurophysiology.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research.
  • Perform protocol-defined animal surgeries.
  • Maintenance of a laboratory inventory. Supporting the PI in ordering and restocking reagents for the laboratory.
  • Maintenance and genotyping of mouse colonies.
  • Molecular and histological analysis of mouse tissues.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.
