Caterpillar Inc. seeks Research Senior Engineer at its facility located at 14009 Old Galena Rd., Bldg E, Chillicothe, IL 61523. Provide catalytic component and system performance and aging fundamental understanding through detailed laboratory experiments and analysis. Kinetic model development and simulation. Lead complex programs to identify, analyze and resolve current issues and will provide solutions for current and future needs in the areas of diesel, natural gas engine, alternate fuel, and hybrid system exhaust catalytic aftertreatment, focused on technical delivery. Design and promote new laboratory test protocols and analytical methods, as well as bench tests and analysis work. Experimentally evaluate aftertreatment technology performance and durability. Develop, calibrate, and validate predictive models for catalytic component and system performance based on application profiles and identify and resolve challenges arising throughout lifecycle of Caterpillar products. Develop and manage a project/program to the plan including directing/supervising the technical work of junior engineers and the work of other team members, specifically mentoring, training on test procedures, data analysis. Establish strategies for new processes and product programs. Keep up to date on new technologies or developing new technologies. Communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units. Support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, dealers, customers and suppliers and develop and maintain a keen understanding of internal customer needs. Evaluate emissions reduction technologies, products, and processes that integrate with advanced engine designs incorporating conventional or renewable/green fuels. Perform bench test equipment design, operation, maintenance, and capability/capacity upgrades. Develop, calibrate, and validate predictive catalyst component and system through-life performance models. Support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, and suppliers. Provide support through all phases of product and process development while ensuring the process runs safely, identify, and address scale-up issues, and develop the final process step. Collaborate with team members and internal clients to perform needs analysis and initiate ideas for low carbon footprint systems solutions.

Requirements

  • PHD degree or foreign equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science, Materials Engineering, specializing in chemical reaction engineering or a related field plus 3 years of experience in aftertreatment catalyst testing and model development or related occupation.
  • Catalyst reaction and degradation mechanisms for state-of-the-art engine exhaust emissions-reducing technologies
  • Experimental characterization and quantification of catalyst performance kinetics and produce high-fidelity, predictive computer models meeting program requirements
  • Catalysis expertise to solve technical issues in areas outside of engine exhaust emissions reduction
  • Development and implementation of standard hardware and procedures for improved experimental test accuracy and reproducibility across multiple test benches
