About The Position

The Hantman Lab in the Neuroscience Center and Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a Research Scientist to study brain circuits involved in motor control, learning, and recovery of function in models of disease and stroke. This is a senior scientific position with substantial responsibility for independent research and project leadership. The Senior Scientist/Research Scientist will design and perform experiments, analyze and interpret complex datasets, develop and lead research projects, contribute to manuscripts and grant applications, mentor trainees, and collaborate with other members of the laboratory and scientific community. Research may involve behavioral neuroscience, mouse models of disease and stroke, whole-brain imaging, neural recordings, circuit manipulation, and analysis of large behavioral, neural, and imaging datasets. The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of complex projects and move them from experimental design and implementation through analysis, interpretation, and scientific communication. The lab uses custom software and hardware for experimental control, data collection, and analysis, and the candidate should be comfortable learning, using, and troubleshooting these systems. Approximately 10% of the position will support shared laboratory operations, including purchasing, organization, regulatory documentation, and other laboratory needs.

Requirements

• Substantial prior neuroscience research experience
• Experience analyzing neural, behavioral, imaging, or other brain-related data
• Record of successfully completing complex research projects
• Ability to independently move projects from experimental design and implementation through data analysis, interpretation, and scientific communication
• Strong scientific judgment, initiative, organization, and communication skills
• Ability to troubleshoot complex experiments and analyses with a high degree of independence
• Experience mentoring or training junior researchers
• Proficiency with MATLAB and/or Python
