About The Position

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) project at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking a research scientist to contribute to Gravitational Wave data analysis. This role involves developing algorithms for scientific data analysis and applying expertise in full-stack software development. The successful applicant will join the LISA team at GSFC, which leads NASA's contribution to the mission. LISA is a joint project between ESA and NASA, aiming to launch the first space-based gravitational wave observatory in the 2030s. NASA's contribution includes the Science Ground Segment (SGS), responsible for processing observatory data and creating scientific data products. This SGS development is a collaborative effort involving researchers from GSFC, Marshall Space Flight Center, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as international partners. The research scientist will develop gravitational wave data analysis algorithms and deploy them in production systems for testing and eventual flight data processing. The role requires both individual contribution and mentorship/leadership of teams. GSFC, located near Washington, DC, is a hub for Earth and Space Science research, hosting numerous scientists and engineers working on various space missions. This position is a one-year contract, renewable for up to three years, hired through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) via the CRESST II collaborative agreement. The nominal start date is January 2027, with flexibility possible. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field by the appointment date. Three years of postdoctoral experience is preferred. Application requires a cover letter, CV with publication list, and a research interests statement. Short-listed candidates will be asked for three letters of reference. Applications received by October 23, 2026, will receive full consideration. Salary range is $79,600 - $98,000, with competitive benefits based on experience and qualifications. This position is in-person or hybrid.
