About The Position

The Research Scientist 2 at the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) will be responsible for conducting and leading techno-economic analyses (TEA) and life cycle assessments (LCA) for critical energy transition challenges and technologies. This includes areas such as low-carbon fuels, hydrogen carriers, industrial process decarbonization, carbon management, and energy storage. The role involves collaborating with researchers at MITEI and across MIT to integrate TEA and/or LCA into energy transition studies. Additionally, the scientist will propose new competitive research to MITEI sponsors, conduct sponsor-funded research projects, represent MITEI’s research to sponsoring companies, and provide expertise for special MITEI studies or focused symposia.

Requirements

  • PhD in Engineering (preferably chemical, mechanical, or systems engineering, though other engineering fields will be considered).
  • A minimum of two years of post-Ph.D. experience.
  • Proved expertise in TEA and LCA for energy systems, exemplified by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
  • Proficiency in Aspen Plus, GREET, or similar software.
  • Robust publication record in scholarly journals.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent grantmaking skills.
  • Excellent mentorship skills.
  • Past experience supervising postdoctoral researchers and/or graduate students.
  • Past experience securing research funding.
  • Past experience managing collaborations.
  • Ability to manage issues with discretion.

Responsibilities
