About The Position

The Research Scientist in the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) at the University of Wisconsin Madison, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, will lead the development of methods, conduct the analyses, and communicate the results in the project to develop a Google Earth Engine and Python. One project will require experience in exceptional event screening for wildfires and blowing dust using TROPOMI and TEMPO satellite observations. Another project will involve random forest and SHAP models for understanding ozone sources and processes using satellite observations, ground observations, meteorology, and land-biosphere variables. Experience in these areas of work is necessary to support the project’s success. This is a part-time position, 50% FTE Please note that this position will not have the option to work remotely internationally.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience (20+ years) in air quality management
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in satellite data applications to air quality and public health including the use of Google Earth Engine and the application of machine learning to air quality management issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience developing methods for forecasting ozone, fine particulates, smoke, and visibility
  • Previous experience conducting research into relationships between ozone, meteorology and climate, and ozone and wildfire smoke, in addition to air quality monitoring data analysis

Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision
  • Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures
  • May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit as needed
  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures
