Research Scientist

E Ink CorporationBillerica, MA
$100,000 - $130,000

About The Position

E Ink is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and hands-on Research Scientist/Engineer to advance E Ink’s front panel laminate (FPL) initiatives through innovations in materials, processes, and device integration. The candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation electrophoretic display platforms, with a focus on external phase design, capsule materials, formulation development, and mechanism-driven problem solving. This individual will work closely with cross-functional research and development teams to connect material properties, process conditions, capsule performance, coating behavior, device electro-optical response, and reliability. The role requires strong technical curiosity, experimental rigor, and the ability to translate scientific understanding into practical solutions for FPL product advancement.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. with 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in materials science, polymer science, chemistry, colloid/interface science, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in polymer materials, surface science, interfaces, emulsions, encapsulation, dispersions, soft matter, or formulation science.
  • Experience designing experiments, analyzing complex data, and developing structure-property-performance relationships.
  • Knowledge of material characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, particle size analysis, rheology, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, surface/interfacial characterization, or mechanical testing of soft materials.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed, motivated, and hands-on personality with the ability to work in a fast-paced, highly interdisciplinary environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of thin films, polymeric phases, and their characterization.
  • Experience designing custom experimental setups or test fixtures.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and simulation packages is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel materials, formulations, and processes to meet product requirements for electrophoretic displays.
  • Conduct wet chemistry experiments to formulate and encapsulate electrophoretic ink systems using a range of encapsulation technologies.
  • Develop characterization methods to enable faster turnaround for material screening, formulation selection, and root-cause analysis.
  • Develop a deep understanding of interfacial interactions among polymers, pigments, solvents, binders, and coating interfaces, and connect these interactions to environmental stability and device performance.
  • Support rapid learning cycles by identifying critical technical unknowns, designing mechanism-driven experiments, proposing contingency plans, and translating experimental findings into actionable project recommendations.
  • Document results in comprehensive technical reports and contribute to patents and trade secrets for intellectual property generation and new technology development.
