In consultation with their Principal Investigator (PI), undertake and execute a program of scientific study culminating in publication. Drives research projects scientifically and determines the course of research as evidenced by leadership, obtaining funding, writing, or other recognition. May not necessarily receive independent resources; however, their contribution is essential to the conceptual/scientific success of the project. They assist their PI in the training and supervision of other laboratory personnel and in a wide variety of administrative tasks, as necessary. The Research Scientist will support the Principal Investigator in the George A. “Doc” Lopez, MD Laboratory for Regenerative Cell Therapy within the Department of Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. This position will play a central role in establishing and advancing the laboratory’s electrophysiology and animal research capabilities. The research scientist must have a PhD in Neuroscience, or Biology, must be able to work independently as needed. The research scientist possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and works well as part of a team. Experience with electrophysiological experiments and animal work is required; experience with Parkinson’s Disease animal model is a plus.

Requirements

Doctorate Related Field of Study required
Previous Research experience (inclusive of graduate and postdoctoral experience) 5-7 years required
Excellent research skills.
Demonstrated evidence of specific scientific competence in field.
Demonstrated broad knowledge of field.
Evidence of potential for scientific creativity and original thought.
Able to exercise independent judgment and leadership.
Ability to contribute to publications.
PhD in Neuroscience, or Biology
Must be able to work independently as needed.
Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Works well as part of a team.
Experience with electrophysiological experiments and animal work is required.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Parkinson’s Disease animal model is a plus.

Responsibilities

Makes proficient intellectual contributions to scientific strategies of the group/lab and plays a leadership role by acting as subject matter authority in the field.
Contributes to the design and execution of experiments and/or research projects.
Exercises judgment in selecting methods and technologies to obtain results.
May collaborate with external researchers and/or receive external project funding support.
Presents results and prepares publications.
May assist PI in the training and supervision of other staff.
Establish, optimize, and maintain the laboratory’s electrophysiology platform.
Design and perform patch-clamp electrophysiology experiments.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for electrophysiology experiments.
Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present electrophysiological data.
Maintain electrophysiology equipment and ensure its proper operation.
Lead all aspects of animal-based research activities.
Establish and perform stereotaxic surgical procedures, drug-delivery techniques, and behavioral assays.
Conduct tissue collection, sectioning, histology, and related analyses.
Develop, optimize, and document experimental protocols and methodologies.
Manage animal research protocols and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate animal ordering and maintain accurate animal inventories, experimental records, and logs.
Maintain equipment used for animal procedures and behavioral testing.
