Research Scientist / Research Engineer, Search Integrity

OpenAI•San Francisco, CA
•$380,000 - $850,000

About The Position

The Research Scientist / Research Engineer will lead Search Integrity within OpenAI’s Foundations Research Search team. The role focuses on building systems that distinguish useful web content from spam, manipulation, and other adversarial or low-quality material. It addresses threats that may only become apparent through links, metadata, and relationships among websites, as well as increasingly convincing content generated at scale. The position will define the technical approach to Search Integrity, develop classifiers and evaluations, and determine how integrity signals affect Search indexing and retrieval. The researcher will work with Search and broader Safety and Integrity teams, using frontier models to advance detection methods and bring them into production. The Foundations Research team explores ideas in data, scaling laws, optimization, model architectures, model-and-search co-design, and efficiency to support training and scaling of future frontier models. The Search team builds agentic search by co-designing model-system interfaces with the search stack, including serving, indexing, and retrieval. It develops large-scale systems for transforming and indexing corpora so models can find and reason over information, and works with researchers to bring modeling advances into production. OpenAI describes itself as an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose AI benefits humanity. It states that it is an equal opportunity employer, provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities, and administers applicant background checks in accordance with applicable law.

Requirements

  • Deep experience in web spam, search quality, adversarial content detection, or related integrity problems at scale.
  • Strong applied machine learning and research skills, including experience developing classifiers, detection methods, and evaluations for real-world systems.
  • Understanding of how adversaries manipulate content and links, coordinate across sites, and adapt to detection systems.
  • Track record of independently defining ambiguous technical problems and driving solutions from experimentation through production.
  • Experience working across research, engineering, and integrity teams while remaining hands-on with technical work.
  • First-principles approach to using frontier models and compute, and strong interest in keeping detection systems effective as adversaries evolve.

Responsibilities

  • Define the technical direction for Search Integrity, identify gaps, and prioritize problems and interventions.
  • Develop AI and ML systems to detect spam, scams, phishing, malicious domains, prompt injections, and other adversarial or low-quality web content.
  • Discover useful signals across page content, links, domains, metadata, and relationships between websites, including patterns of coordinated manipulation.
  • Build evaluations to measure detection quality and the effects of integrity interventions on the information Search surfaces.
  • Translate detection signals into indexing, ranking, and filtering decisions to improve what models can retrieve and rely on.
  • Serve as the technical owner for integrity within Search and partner with researchers, engineers, and broader Safety and Integrity teams to build and deploy systems.
