Research Scientist Intern, Robotic Control Policy (PhD)

Meta•Redmond, WA
•$7,650 - $12,667

About The Position

At Reality Labs Research, the goal is to explore, innovate, and design novel interfaces and hardware for next-generation virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. The team conducts research toward natural, seamless XR experiences that are effective, enjoyable, and functionally indistinguishable from real-world experiences. The Research Scientist Intern will work at the intersection of robotic control, machine learning, and human-robot interaction, with collaborators and mentors in these fields. The primary focus is developing data-driven and machine-learning-powered robotic control policies for dextrous manipulation and teleoperation applications. Internships last 12 to 24 weeks, with various start dates throughout the year; some projects may require a minimum of 16 consecutive weeks.

Requirements

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, or a relevant technical field.
  • Understands the state of the art in robotic manipulation control policies and can advance the technological frontier in an impactful and efficient way.
  • Experience with ROS, Python, PyTorch or JAX, or related languages.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Interpersonal skills for cross-group and cross-cultural collaboration.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A proven track record of significant results, demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as RSS, ICRA, IROS, CoRL, T-RO, IJRR, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, JMLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, TPAMI, or similar.
  • Experience with modern control policies such as reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and large behavioral models.
  • Familiarity with robotics modeling and analysis, including kinematics, dynamics, motion planning, perception, task planning, and control theory.
  • Experience working with robot manipulation.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Intent to return to the degree program after completing the internship or co-op.
  • Availability for a minimum 16 consecutive-week internship.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct collaborative research on developing control policies for a range of robotics platforms.
  • Implement frameworks to train state-of-the-art machine-learning control policies, such as Large Behavioral Models, Imitation Learning, and Reinforcement Learning.
  • Develop robotic data-collection pipelines for robotic dextrous manipulation, train models, and benchmark different algorithms.
  • Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners, including communicating research plans, progress, and results.
