About The Position

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time Research Scientist III position. The Research Scientist III position will entail planning experiments and supervising a team of technicians and students involved in longitudinal behavioral and electrophysiological rodent experiments in vivo. Developing pipelines for complex brain-wide data collection and instructing team members in data acquisition and processing. The candidate is also expected to independently write scientific papers and grants as well as manage the resources allocated within the scope of current grants. The work requires the ability to oversee multiple complex scientific projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of professional research experience in an appropriate field or master's degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, or Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate degree, Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Psychology, or related discipline, with 10+ years of experience with behavioral rodent models.
  • At least 10 years of experience following Ph.D. completion:
  • Demonstrated expertise in manipulation techniques to study neuronal circuits (e.g. optogenetics, chemogenetics).
  • Proficiency in common coding languages such as R and Python, as well as biostatistic tools.
  • Previous record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • At least 10 years of experience following Ph.D. completion:
  • Be proficient with in vivo and in vitro acute and chronic electrophysiology recording, in vivo calcium imaging in rodents.
  • Expertise with in vivo and in vitro brain imaging.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of 5-7 technicians and students
  • Coordinate and plan research for current grants
  • Develop custom analysis pipelines for electrophysiological and microscopy data for quantification of structural and functional neuronal markers.
  • Ensure data integrity, code documentation, and reproducibility of analysis.
  • Lead manuscript preparation and submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Mentor staff and students in thesis writing and data presentation for scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to grant reports and new grant submissions in the role of investigator or collaborator.
  • Prepare and submit grants as principal investigator.
  • Maintain IACUC protocols and records related to SOPs and biosafety standards, facilitate the establishment of lab infrastructure and workflow within RFMH/NYSPI and CERH at Columbia University.
