About The Position

The Research Scientist II position at Amazon Development Center U.S., Inc. involves designing and conducting research studies, developing theories and models related to quantum computing hardware, superconducting qubit device physics, and materials. The role requires collaboration on design specifications for quantum processor chips and associated components, as well as developing and verifying scientific and mathematical models to predict device behavior. Responsibilities also include applying statistical methods, operating laboratory equipment for device fabrication and characterization, developing new algorithms for quantum computers, and establishing performance metrics for quantum information technology. Requirements

  • PhD or foreign equivalent degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of at least one of the following: (1) computational modeling relevant to quantum computing hardware; (2) solid-state device design or fabrication, including of photonics, mechanics, or electronics devices; (3) experimental test and measurement of quantum devices; (4) control systems relevant to quantum computing; or (5) quantum theory including qubit gates, readout, or error correction.
  • Employer will accept a Master's degree or foreign equivalent degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and five years of research or work experience in the job offered, or as a Research Scientist, Research Assistant, Research Software Engineer, or a related occupation as equivalent to a PhD.
  • If qualifying with a Master’s degree, must have five years of research or work experience with a combination of any of the following skills: (1) computational modeling relevant to quantum computing hardware; (2) solid-state device design or fabrication, including of photonics, mechanics, or electronics devices; (3) experimental test and measurement of quantum devices; (4) control systems relevant to quantum computing; or (5) quantum theory including qubit gates, readout, or error correction.
  • Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and seven years of progressive post-baccalaureate research or work experience in the job offered or a related occupation as equivalent to a PhD or Master's degree and five years of research or work experience.
  • If qualifying with a Bachelor’s degree, must have seven years of research or work experience with a combination of any of the following skills: (1) computational modeling relevant to quantum computing hardware; (2) solid-state device design or fabrication, including of photonics, mechanics, or electronics devices; (3) experimental test and measurement of quantum devices; (4) control systems relevant to quantum computing; or (5) quantum theory including qubit gates, readout, or error correction.

Responsibilities

  • Design research studies to obtain scientific information.
  • Develop theories or models of physical phenomena encountered in quantum computing, superconducting qubit device physics, materials or process development and characterization.
  • Collaborate with others to determine design specifications, including of superconducting quantum processor chips, microwave chip packages, and associated electrical and mechanical components.
  • Develop scientific or mathematical models to predict physical device behavior and performance, and verify the implementation of computational models.
  • Apply mathematical principles or statistical approaches to solve problems, for example to validate modeling predictions under experimental uncertainty using statistical methods.
  • Operate laboratory or field equipment and scientific instrumentation for device fabrication, device characterization, or advanced materials research.
  • Develop new algorithms or methods for designing, simulating, or measuring quantum computers.
  • Develop performance metrics or standards related to quantum information technology.
  • Recommend technical design or process changes to improve quality or performance of superconducting quantum processors and efficiency of their design, manufacture, and testing.
  • Collaborate on research activities with scientists or technical specialists.
  • Prepare scientific or technical reports or presentations and present research results to others.
