About The Position

E Ink is seeking a creative, highly motivated, and hands-on scientist to join our team to build cutting-edge instruments and measurement systems to support the adoption of E Ink displays in new applications. This role is central to the mission of advancing electrophoretic display technologies by deepening our fundamental understanding of all components of electrophoretic display systems and their interactions. As part of E Ink's Research team, you will also support new display product development by creating and running new test methods to lead materials research. Activities include developing new electro-optical tests and instruments as well as maintaining and improving existing ones, designing and executing electro-optical experiments, developing models and drive schemes to improve display performance, and furthering fundamental understanding of display performance. As a key team member, you will be expected to take on challenging exploratory projects that lead to product improvement and new products in a culture of open review and critical discussion. E Ink maintains a lean team where each member has strong visibility and responsibility to meet company goals.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical / Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Math or a related field plus 0-3 years of industrial experience or M.S. plus 2-5 years of industrial experience, or B.S. plus 5 or more years of industrial experience
  • Proven track record of designing, building, and validating embedded systems and complex electronics for electrical or electro-optical test systems, from initial concept to deployment
  • Proficiency with electronic laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, soldering equipment, power supplies etc.), along with data analysis and test automation tools
  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following or related disciplines: hardware and electronics, optimization algorithms, signals and systems, and soft materials
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a track record of innovative solutions
  • Self-directed, motivated, and hands-on personality. Ability to work in a fast-paced, open-minded highly interdisciplinary work environment. Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with soft materials such as polymers and colloids and their electrical properties

Responsibilities

  • Maintain existing and develop new electro-optical tests and instruments, including hardware, control electronics, and automation software to support R&D and product development across global teams
  • Initiate, direct, and execute research of drive schemes, including hardware, for performance optimization and new product development
  • Design and execute electro-optical experiments to characterize display performance
  • Develop algorithms and drive schemes for general understanding of how displays work and to guide development of new display materials
  • Work with and contribute to an agile, inspiring and supportive team to rapidly advance project goals and actively pursue contingency plans
  • Create and document intellectual property
