About The Position

The Bioengineering Department at the University of Washington is looking to fill a position at the RSE-4 level in the research laboratory of Professor Michael Regnier. The RSE-4 will play a critical role in Biomedical Engineering, focusing on muscle biology. This role studies the molecular mechanisms of cardiac and skeletal muscle disease and uses this information to develop novel gene therapies and proteins, cells, and tissue engineering approaches for the treatment of disease.

Requirements

Master’s degree in a Bioengineering, Engineering, or related field.
Four years of experience in muscle cell tissue and stem cell research, instrumentation & protocol development, and proteomics.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

Independently managing complex, multi-faceted research projects with a focus on muscle biology.
Planning, coordinating, and supervising research activities.
Developing and applying innovative methods to investigate the molecular mechanisms of muscle function.
Serving as a technical resource to the Regnier research group and collaborators, contributing to cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research efforts.
Initiating new project concepts and seeking funding.
Developing technical proposals and making presentations to potential customers/grant sponsors.
Identifying funding opportunities and working with PI to organize proposals.
Taking a lead role in preparing proposals for grants and contracts.
Developing collaborations with other research labs at UW, around the USA and internationally.
Developing and utilizing stem cell differentiation and long-term culture protocols for production of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells.
Developing analytical tools for characterization of stem cell derived muscle cells.
Developing new instrumentation for mechanical and biochemical analysis of isolated contractile organelles from stem cell derived muscle.
Summarizing data/results in narrative or graphic form for inclusion in proposals and progress reports.
Presenting information to sponsors at site visits as requested by PI/supervisor.
Managing multiple or significant projects which may require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques.
Leading others on assigned work, providing major input to staffing of overall project teams, building teams and staff to optimize efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Coaching, supporting, and managing the work of senior fellows and graduate/undergraduate students.
Training lab members to perform specialized tasks and following up to correct performance.
Maintaining the inventory of lab supplies and materials.
Using department approved methods to purchase goods and materials.
Providing required documents to the department’s fiscal office.
Attending lab meetings and sharing updates and information with the group.
Managing the work of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the lab.
Following standard operating protocols and performing assigned tasks in a manner that is safe for self and others in the lab.
Establishing standard operating protocols for lab procedures as requested by PI/supervisor.
Taking a lead role in writing journal articles for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Contributing substantial ideas and research summaries/data for inclusion in journal articles written by others.
Presenting at UW events (journal clubs, lab meetings, etc.).
Presenting research results at lab meetings.
Delivering invited presentations at national and international conferences and workshops.
Engaging with professional societies and committees.
