About The Position

We are seeking a Research Nurse who will support two studies related to cardiology, geriatrics, and caregiving. The position is funded through the Johns Hopkins Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center Pilot/Exploratory Studies Core Award and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. The Research Nurse will serve as a key member of the Johns Hopkins Healthy Heart Aging Program (HHAP), a multidisciplinary geriatric cardiology clinic, supporting implementation and evaluation of a frailty-integrated model of cardiovascular care for older adults. Responsibilities include supporting the HHAP registry, implementation study and focus groups, and coordination of advanced biomarker and technological assessments, in collaboration with cardiology, geriatrics, palliative care, and other specialties. Additionally, the role will support the Testing Heart Failure Resilience Intervention for Caregivers (HEROIC) in Advanced Heart Failure study, a 5-year research study funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Responsibilities will include promoting strong connections with clinics, engaging providers, screening and enrollment of participants (patients and caregivers), delivering the HEROIC program to caregivers, and community engagement and dissemination activities. Responsibilities will include in-person and remote work. A flexible schedule is available to accommodate weekly Tuesday or Thursday PM clinic sessions.

Requirements

  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related discipline.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience in cardiovascular nursing (inpatient or outpatient cardiology or cardiac surgery); knowledge of and comfort with cardiovascular disease and geriatric conditions.
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system.
  • Experience in home or community settings preferred.
  • Ability to work from a collaborative, participant-directed model.
  • Clinical background in cardiology, critical care or palliative care.
  • Clinical research experience in behavioral interventions or longitudinal studies.
  • ELNEC palliative care training.
  • Two years of related nursing experience, with additional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Be present for all HHAP clinic sessions, held weekly on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons.
  • Obtain informed consent from patients joining the HHAP research registry.
  • Assist participants with completion of research surveys and pre-visit questionnaires.
  • Coordinate participant referrals and transportation for biomarker collection and digital biomarker assessments.
  • Perform data entry from Epic into REDCap, abstracting relevant data points from clinical notes.
  • Conduct phone-based follow-up with participants to administer select questionnaires and assessments.
  • Support mixed methods implementation research, including surveys, focus groups, and qualitative data abstraction.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation per research protocols and IRB requirements.
  • Track participant recruitment, enrollment, and completion of study procedures.
  • Engage in training related to electronic health record screening, recruitment, intervention and documentation.
  • Attend weekly meetings with study team.
  • Communicate with clinicians and research team members about participant progress and study operation.
  • Proactively reach out to study team to meet additional training needs.
  • Promote strong connections with clinics involved in the study and engage providers.
  • Attend monthly Patient and Family Advisory Council Meetings as needed (may be an evening).
  • Collaborate in the development of recruitment strategies to ensure patient accrual within protocol timeframes.
  • Use in-person, telephone and text-based messaging strategies with professionalism and respect.
