About The Position

ARJR Research Fellows represent the continued commitment of Hospital for Special Surgery to train clinicians in the evaluation and management of patients in the musculoskeletal specialty of hip and knee arthroplasty. The goal is to provide highly motivated physicians with the clinical knowledge and research skills necessary for a successful academic clinical career in this field.

Requirements

  • Doctorate (Medical Degree) preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in clinical research required
  • Prior Epic experience
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and Good Technology Practice
  • Proficient use of computers and software

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Orthopaedic and/or Rheumatologic terminology is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Spend one (1) day per week observing in the clinical setting (operating room or clinic).
  • Witness complex cases on other days, as long as they are not covered by another ARJR fellow or resident.
  • Participate in post-operative care and rounding duties for operating cases.
  • Attend weekly case conferences, select core lectures, and biomechanics laboratory sessions.
  • Participate in case presentations for the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Division.
  • Be actively involved in the teaching of medical students and orthopedic residents.
  • Participate in the development of a video-based curriculum (through HSS EAcademy) for future orthopedic surgeons and trainees.
  • Spend four (4) days per week performing clinical research.
  • Complete at least three clinical research projects leading to publication and conference acceptances.
  • Independently perform literature reviews, develop study hypotheses, and complete detailed methodological protocols for experiments.
  • Present research work to the designated research mentor for approval.
  • Complete manuscript preparations.
  • Attend weekly research meetings.
  • Supervise and teach medical students and undergraduate research students.
  • Attend one career development workshop dedicated to becoming a surgeon scientist.
  • Complete a research protocol for incoming fellows, which must be reviewed by the ARJR Clinical Review Panel and Hospital for Special Surgery's Investigational Review Board.
  • Fully execute and approve the research protocol at the conclusion of the fellowship.
