About The Position

This position assists with agricultural research in an experimental farm environment. The Research Farm Specialist 2 is an experienced role that differs from a Research Farm Specialist 1 by the requirements for observing, evaluating, and reporting conditions in a research environment, and differs from a Research Farm Supervisor by the lack of supervisory responsibilities. The role involves assisting professional researchers with research projects, laying out research plots, labeling treatments, collecting data, handling complex aspects of animal care, conducting basic laboratory tests, calculating chemical application rates, calibrating equipment, and performing comparable farming tasks in other agricultural research areas.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in research farming or in general farm management.
  • College credit in agricultural courses will substitute for the required experience on the basis of one semester hour for two months of experience.
  • Experience in crop or livestock farming will substitute for the required experience on the basis of eighteen months for one year of experience.
  • Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Commission of Higher Education; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Responsibilities

  • Discusses research projects with professional researchers to devise methods and provide technical farming expertise.
  • Lays out research plots, labels treatments for animals or plants, and collects data.
  • Handles complex aspects of animal care, such as delivery when complications arise, treatment of unusual health problems, assisting with experimental breeding techniques.
  • Conducts basic laboratory tests on samples.
  • Calculates proportions and application rates of chemicals and assists with complex applications of experimental chemicals and treatment.
  • Calibrates and precisely adjusts complex equipment.
  • Collects and assembles data from research plots and experimental animals.
  • Performs comparable farming tasks in other agricultural research areas such as forestry, aquaculture, agricultural engineering, etc.
  • Cares and feeds livestock.
  • Assists in animal health by observing, evaluating, and reporting conditions in a research environment.
  • Administering medication as prescribed and checking progress.
  • Assist in breeding animals, delivering young, collecting semen and performing other specialized duties related to the care of animals.
  • Cares for and maintains field crops.
  • Assists in monitoring the health of field crops by observing, evaluating, and reporting conditions in a research environment.
  • Assists in all operations associated with crop production including tillage, planting, maintaining, and harvesting row crops.
  • Calibrate, adjust, operate, and maintain specialized equipment used in livestock or field crop research.
  • Operates, maintains, and makes random adjustments to complex agricultural and/or research equipment.
  • Calculate proportions and application rates of chemicals.
  • Calibrate, adjust operate, and maintain agricultural pesticide applicators.
  • Assist research professionals with complex applications of experimental chemicals and treatments.
  • Discuss and assist professionals with research projects to devise methods and provide technical livestock and field crop production expertise.
  • Assist research professionals in laying out plots, labeling treatments for animals or plants, and collection of data.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
