About The Position

To assist with agricultural research in an experimental farm environment. This is an experienced level position receiving general supervision from professional researchers or other higher level personnel, with no supervisory responsibilities. It differs from a Research Farm Specialist 1 by the requirements for observing, evaluating, and reporting conditions in a research environment, and differs from a Research Farm Supervisor by the lack of supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in research farming or in farm management; OR Three years of experience in farming; OR Twelve semester hours in an agricultural field.

Responsibilities

  • Discusses research projects with professional researchers to devise methods and provide technical farming expertise.
  • Lays out research plots, labels treatments for animals or plants, and collects data.
  • Handles complex aspects of animal care, such as delivery when complications arise, treatment of unusual health problems, assisting with experimental breeding techniques.
  • Conducts basic laboratory tests on samples.
  • Calculates proportions and application rates of chemicals and assists with complex applications of experimental chemicals and treatment.
  • Calibrates and precisely adjusts complex equipment.
  • Collects and assembles data from research plots and experimental animals.
  • Performs comparable farming tasks in other agricultural research areas such as forestry, aquaculture, agricultural engineering, etc.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Perform routine livestock (sheep and goats) care function, checking health and treating sick or crippled animals.
  • Mixes and administers feed according to research specifications, transport animals for sale and research, assist with breeding, manage pregnant ewes and does.
  • Independently operates aging tractors and implements for pasture fertilization and planting, mixing and applying chemicals, cutting and maintaining pasture grasses and plants.
  • Assist with research by collecting data, administering supplements and drugs, and adjusting barns and pastures to fit research project designs.
  • Inspects and maintains plumbing, carpentry, fencing, provides building and grounds maintenance and varmit control.
  • Records and reports necessary maintenance on sheep unit tractors and farm equipment.
