About The Position

The Research Farm Assistant 2 provides specialized, routine care and maintenance of animals, crops, equipment, and facilities in an agricultural research environment. This experienced-level position is located at the Reproductive Biology Center in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, and receives general supervision from higher-level personnel. The role operates farm machinery and equipment, cares for livestock, maintains property and fences, and performs repairs and other upkeep. Employees may assist with training lower-level personnel but do not exercise formal supervision.

Requirements

• One year of experience in the care of animals; general care of crops, shrubs, or plants; or operation of farm-related equipment and machinery.
• College credit in agricultural courses may substitute for experience at one semester hour for two months of experience.
• Any college credit or degree used for substitution must be from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

• Operate farm machinery and equipment, including tractors, lawnmowers, batwing rotary cutters, disks and cultipackers, hay cutters and rakes, seed broadcasters, and chemical application equipment.
• Care for livestock through daily health checks, pen maintenance, assistance with deworming protocols, rotational grazing, putting out hay, feeding, and recording daily health and observation logs.
• Maintain property and fences, including spraying fence-line weeds, maintaining hard and hotwire fences, repairing gates and fences, building enclosures, maintaining drainage ditches, and mowing pastures and lawns around buildings.
• Make adjustments and repairs to farm equipment, lawn mowers, ATVs, and tractors.
• Assist with maintenance of the shop area, shade structures, and main building.
• Keep simple records related to farming operations, as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
