About The Position

Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona seeks a Research Engineering Instrument Maker IV to fabricate, assemble, and test components for space- and ground-based telescope instrumentation. The position works with faculty, engineers, and students and requires expertise in mechanical assembly, machining, and the use of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and polymers. This role supports a federal contract and requires U.S. citizenship; non-U.S. citizens and dual citizens cannot be considered. The position fabricates a wide variety of components using conventional and CNC equipment, inspects finished parts, and supports the setup and testing of new or experimental equipment. It also involves working with customers on design details, generating CAM toolpaths, estimating job costs, maintaining cost records, and identifying ways to reduce project costs. The work takes place in a machine-shop environment with common odors, fumes, and noise, and may involve materials requiring appropriate personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience, including experience with CAD and CAM software and the operation of manual and CNC machines, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • U.S. citizenship; non-U.S. citizens and dual citizens are not eligible due to the federal contract.
  • Knowledge of mechanical inspection techniques, including proper use and maintenance of mechanical inspection equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and adapt or modify sketches and blueprints based on applicable properties and mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to stand up to eight hours, climb stairs and ladders, and lift and carry objects weighing up to 55 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a machine-shop environment with typical odors, fumes, and noise, use appropriate PPE around materials, and understand the applicable Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with manual machines and a HAAS CNC mill.
  • Experience using HSMWorks and SolidWorks.
  • Experience working with G-code and M-code and generating toolpaths using CAM software.
  • Experience producing precision optics.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate components using conventional and CNC lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and similar equipment; gauge work with precision measuring instruments.
  • Develop or direct equipment setup and appropriate testing of new or experimental equipment, and analyze performance and reliability.
  • Fabricate jigs and fixtures as required.
  • Perform complex mechanical inspections on completed parts using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other inspection devices.
  • Interface with customers to obtain design details and generate toolpaths using CAM software.
  • Prepare estimates for projected jobs and maintain cost records.
  • Provide customers with information on opportunities to reduce project costs.
