Engineer - Propulsion and Power Systems

GE Aerospace•Elgin Township, IL
•$90,000 - $100,000•Onsite

About The Position

GE Aerospace Research is seeking an early-career Research Engineer to join its Propulsion and Power Systems (PPS) Laboratory. PPS provides systems-level technology assessment, integration, and development for propulsion and power applications serving GE Aerospace's Commercial and Defense & Systems customers. The laboratory evaluates and advances integrated system concepts for next-generation and future products, focusing on how technologies interact within and across propulsion and power architectures. The early-career development program is designed to build technical expertise in propulsion and power systems as well as organizational intelligence and leadership skills. During the first three years, researchers establish a technical foundation in their home laboratory, take on stretch assignments across capabilities, and connect with a cohort of early-career peers. Development includes independent research, structured projects, coursework, and mentorship. The role contributes to engineering analysis and test activities involving gas turbine propulsion, high-speed flight, or electrified propulsion. The researcher works with established models and simulation tools, supports subsystem and system-level test campaigns and safety assessments, and collaborates with researchers across disciplines. The position is based at the GE Aerospace Research office in Niskayuna, New York. The role may require access to controlled or classified information and may require obtaining a U.S. Government Secret clearance, with the ability to attain Top Secret clearance. Relocation assistance is provided.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
  • Relevant coursework, thesis, or project experience in propulsion and power systems, thermal-fluid systems, systems engineering, or experimental methods.
  • Fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and communicate technical information clearly.
  • Willingness to work from the GE Aerospace Research office in Niskayuna, New York.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for the projects described; the role may require an active U.S. Government Secret clearance and ability to attain Top Secret clearance.
  • Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.
  • Must apply through careers.geaerospace.com to be considered.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and able to prove U.S. Person status for access to export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Systems-oriented interest in how technologies interact at the system level rather than in a single component or discipline in isolation.
  • Prior internship, co-op, or research experience with a research orientation, such as thesis-based work, publications, conference presentations, patents, or open-source technical contributions.
  • A humble, focused, and transparent approach: willingness to learn and welcome feedback, use data and hypotheses to make decisions, and communicate clearly across teams to reach evidence-based conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with laboratory, environmental health and safety, and security requirements across analysis, build, and test activities, and promptly raise safety concerns.
  • Contribute to systems-level technology assessments for gas turbine propulsion, high-speed flight, or electrified propulsion applications, working with senior researchers for direction on approach and scope.
  • Add features to established models and simulation tools, run sensitivity studies, and correlate predictions against test data.
  • Support pre-test analysis and predictions, instrumentation and test setup, data reduction, and execution of subsystem and system-level test campaigns.
  • Support hazard identification, safety assessment, and commissioning activities preceding subsystem and integrated system testing.
  • Develop an understanding of how components and subsystems couple within propulsion and power architectures and how work supports the products served.
  • Collaborate with researchers across disciplines, build a professional network, and seek and apply feedback from mentors and senior team members.
  • Plan and prioritize tasks with guidance, deliver quality work on schedule, raise risks early, provide status updates to project leads, and contribute to invention disclosures and publication of research results.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Access to a Health Coach and a 24/7 confidential Employee Assistance Program.
  • GE Aerospace Retirement Savings Plan, including a 401(k) with company matching and company retirement contributions.
  • Tuition assistance.
  • Adoption assistance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Paid time off for vacation or illness.
  • Eligibility for the GE Aerospace AIR Bonus Program, with a current target of 5% of base salary.
  • Relocation assistance.
