About The Position

The Saskatchewan Research Council’s (SRC) Research and Technology – Technical Services Division is seeking a Research Engineer to plan and deliver applied research, modelling, testing, and process development with focus on industrial multiphase flow related research projects. This position applies professional engineering knowledge to design and execute experimental programs, analyze technical data, troubleshoot process and equipment issues, and prepare clear technical reports for internal and external stakeholders. Working independently within established objectives and with guidance from senior technical and business leaders, the role contributes to safe, reliable, and high-quality project delivery while supporting continuous improvement of methods, procedures and facility capabilities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in chemical, mechanical or related engineering discipline is required
  • Professional engineering designation, or eligibility for registration with APEGS, is required where the engineering title is used
  • Typically requires a minimum of five to seven years of relevant engineering, applied research, process development or industrial testing experience
  • Sound professional judgement with the ability to apply engineering principles to moderately complex technical problems
  • Background in experimental multiphase flow and fluid mechanics along with strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical data and recommend practical solutions
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information clearly to internal teams, clients and external stakeholders
  • Collaborative working style with the ability to build productive relationships and contribute positively to multidisciplinary project teams
  • The chosen candidate will also be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to SRC prior to the commencement of any employment duties. The Criminal Record Check must have been executed within the preceding 30 days of receipt.

  • A PhD is considered an asset
  • Combined experience and education in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy is considered an asset
  • Experience with experimental design, pilot-scale or process equipment, data acquisition systems, technical reporting and industrial client projects is preferred
  • Knowledge of rare earth element processing, hydrometallurgy, multiphase flow, slurry systems, process design, chemical processing or related industrial applications is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute engineering experiments, test programs and applied research activities using lab, pilot-scale and process equipment
  • Apply engineering principles to develop, modify, and improve test methods, procedures and operating practices within established project objectives
  • Collect, review and analyze technical data; identify trends, issues and potential solutions; and communicate findings through technical reports, presentations and client updates
  • Coordinate assigned work in specialized test areas, including high-pressure/high-temperature and slurry testing environments, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately and in accordance with applicable procedures and project requirements
  • Participate in hazard assessments, safety reviews and operational readiness activities to support safe execution of experimental and process work
  • Troubleshoot equipment, process and testing issues, recommending practical improvements to methods, equipment use and project execution
  • Support client and stakeholder interactions by explaining technical information, clarifying project requirements and contributing to proposals, reports and presentations
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff, students or technicians as required, and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team
  • Maintain accurate records, follow quality and safety requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement of facility capabilities and project delivery practices
