Research Engineer, Responsibility, DeepMind
About The Position
Research-focused Software Engineers at Google are embedded throughout the company, where they set up large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas. They create experiments and prototypes, design architectures, and work on real-world research problems while staying connected to the research community through university partnerships and publications. This role joins a specialized Applied Research and Responsibility team within Google. The team reports within Google's Global Affairs organization and remains deeply integrated with DeepMind. The work advances Responsible AI through engineering solutions and research in collaboration with Research Scientists. The posting describes DeepMind as an interdisciplinary AI lab focused on addressing complex global challenges and accelerating product innovation, with safety and ethics as priorities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Math, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in Python programming.
- Experience with Generative AI, Generative AI agents, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Experience with Cloud AI/Machine learning systems and tools, such as Kaggle, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
Nice To Haves
- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or Math, or a technically oriented MBA degree.
- Experience with AI ethics, responsible development, trust and safety, or adversarial thinking.
Responsibilities
- Design and prototype engineering solutions, scale them, and run experiments to address emerging research priorities within the Responsibility portfolio.
- Work with Research Scientists to advance the state of the art in Responsible AI.
- Act as a technical anchor for the team by establishing best practices for code quality, scalability, and system design.
- Present complex engineering trade-offs and research results clearly to cross-functional stakeholders and leadership.
- Lead project teams and set technical direction.
